In a remote village surrounded by mountains, Yoshiki and his best friend Hikaru have done everything together for years. Then Hikaru goes missing in the mountains for a week. When he returns, Yoshiki realises the truth: Hikaru died up there, and the thing that came back is something else wearing his face, his voice and his memories. The creature asks Yoshiki to keep its secret and to stay its friend, and Yoshiki, unable to let go of Hikaru, agrees. But strange, terrible things begin happening around the village, and its older residents seem to know more than they say about what lives in the mountains, and what the thing beside Yoshiki really is. Mokumokuren's series is a quiet, deeply unsettling horror story about grief, longing and an impossible friendship, with an atmosphere of humid summer dread. It was adapted into an anime.

Two years after the events of Tokyo Ghoul, the CCG, the agency that hunts ghouls, has created the Quinx: young investigators implanted with ghoul organs so that they can fight with the same powers as their prey. Their mentor is Haise Sasaki, a gentle, bookish investigator who is himself a hybrid, and who cannot remember anything about his life before a certain point. The Quinx squad is a difficult team to lead: the ambitious Urie, the anxious Mutsuki, the lazy but gifted Saiko and the hard-working Shirazu each have reasons of their own to fight. As they take on dangerous ghoul organisations, Haise is haunted by dreams and fragments of memory, and by the growing suspicion that his past may change everything. Sui Ishida's sequel deepens every theme of the original, from identity and memory to the cycle of violence between humans and ghouls, with striking, experimental artwork. It was adapted into an anime and brings the story of Tokyo Ghoul to its conclusion.

Ghouls live hidden among the people of Tokyo, looking human but able to survive only by eating human flesh. Shy, bookish student Ken Kaneki learns this the hard way when a date with the beautiful Rize ends in an attack. After a desperate surgery, he wakes up half-ghoul, the first of his kind, and hungry for what he cannot bear to eat. Caught between two worlds that want each other dead, Kaneki finds an unexpected refuge at Anteiku, a quiet coffee shop run by ghouls who try to live without killing, where the fierce waitress Touka reluctantly helps him. Meanwhile the investigators of the CCG hunt ghouls without mercy, and Kaneki must decide how much of his humanity he can keep. Sui Ishida's series is dark, graphic and heartbreaking, a story about identity, prejudice and the monstrous things people do to survive. It was adapted into an anime and continues in the sequel Tokyo Ghoul:re.

In the 1970s, a group of children live at Star Kids' Home, a residential home for kids whose parents cannot look after them. In the yard sits an old, broken-down Nissan Sunny 1200, and to the children it is everything. Inside the car, they take imaginary journeys, hide from the world, fight, dream and wait for families who may never come back. Through the eyes of children such as the wild, angry Haruo and the newly arrived Sei, the series captures the joy, loneliness and resilience of growing up together while feeling apart. Taiyo Matsumoto, drawing on his own childhood experience, creates a poignant, beautifully drawn story that never pretends care can simply replace a family. Sunny won the Shogakukan Manga Award and is considered one of his masterpieces.

Guideau was cursed by a witch, and the two travel together searching for the one responsible, the only way to break the curse. Their cases bring them into societies where witches are feared, admired or misunderstood, and into dangerous magic that rarely fits neat categories of good and evil. Kurouzu-cho, a small, foggy town on the coast of Japan, is cursed, not by a ghost or a monster but by a shape: the spiral. Kirie Goshima's withdrawn boyfriend, Shuichi Saito, is the first to notice it, as his father becomes obsessed with spirals in seashells, ferns, whirlpools and everything around him. At first the signs are small and eerie, but soon the curse spreads through the whole town: in the wind, in people's hair and bodies, in the lighthouse and the sea. Kirie tries to understand what is happening and protect the people she loves, while the town is drawn ever deeper into the pattern and escape seems less and less possible. Junji Ito's masterpiece is one of the most celebrated horror manga ever made, a slow, surreal and unforgettable descent drawn with breathtaking detail. It was adapted into a black-and-white anime series.

Midori Nagumo is broke, behind on her rent and running out of excuses. Her best friend has stopped lending her money, her landlady has stopped believing her promises, and getting a job would mean less time for fun. Every scheme she invents to get by spirals into something stranger, and drags half the neighbourhood along with it. The city around her is full of people with lives just as odd: students, shopkeepers, police officers and a small restaurant that is never quite under control. Their stories cross in unexpected ways, and a gag that starts in one chapter may only land several chapters later, when the whole town gets involved. Keiichi Arawi, the creator of Nichijou, builds CITY like a carefully timed machine of absurd comedy, drawn with clean lines and boundless energy. Warm, ridiculous and surprisingly touching, it was adapted into an anime by Kyoto Animation, and it is best read as a long walk through a town you will want to visit again.
